Jacqueline Shea Caraglior

Artist and Art Teacher

From a young age, Jacqueline pursued traditional fine art training in all media. As an undergraduate, Jacqueline studied conceptual art practice at UCLA and found her voice as a contemporary artist. She continues to maintain a personal art practice that includes painting, drawing, photography and film.

Jacqueline has her Maters in Education and has worked in a variety of educational settings including Montessori and Special Education. She is now thrilled to be working at Hangzhou International School as the Lower School Art Teacher, grades K-5. As a PYP teacher, Jacqueline works to bridge the gap between art making and homeroom studies. She sees art project concepts as opportunities for students to share ideas about what they are learning in other subject areas. Jacqueline is passionate about developing student’s visual literacy skills both as young artists and as art viewers. In fostering this aspect of artistic domain thinking, she hopes to encourage students to use art as a language to express their ideas. Above all, Jacqueline wants her student to create artworks that embody personal truths about themselves, their experiences and their learning.

When teaching art making skills, Jaqueline is an advocate for a process over product mindset. She believes that students will naturally learn the techniques of new media through experimentation and problem solving. She wants her students to feel the freedom to make mistakes and fully enjoy the experience of creating. She encourages students to think deeply about the way in which materials work by discussing media limitations and advantages through a conceptual lens. Students gain these insights through their own direct experiences. Through repeated exposure to the same art making media, students gain confidence in their technical abilities. Artists are innovators and there is no right or wrong way to make your mark. Jaqueline is inspired when students find new and unusual way to make art that helps to communicate their own unique perspectives.
